Hi andy,
As already discussed in this list, we do not compile with VC++6 yet.
I am not surprised if there are some inconsistencies.

In the coming weeks, I will get a new PC where I intend to install
the latest versions of VC++ and also Fortran (required for g2root).
May be the next release of Root under Windows will be with VC++6.
I would be interested to know the fraction of Root users that could
be affected by moving to version 6 or vice-versa keeping version 5.
