Yes I have run into this too. I found that adding the
option -fwritable-strings will fix it.

CXX = g++

CXXFLAGS = -O -I$(ROOTSYS)/include -fPIC -fno-rtti -fno-exceptions \
-fwritable-strings -mcpu=ev5 -D__osf__ -D__alpha

I see that I have added to:
LDFLAGS = -g -fwritable-strings

but I don't think that's needed...
