gif files with 16 bit graphics card (Linux)

Hi Rooters,
I am on Linux/egcs, root 2.00-11 with ATI Xpertwork 8MB AGP
graphics card using 16 bpp colors. Trying to display a gif
file by xv doesnt work, xv tells me: gif file seems truncated
Winging it.
With 8 bpp colors it works.
